The Salazar Archive
Ruben Salazar was killed on August 29, 1970, as he reported on a march in East Los Angeles against the Vietnam War. While writing a profile of Salazar on the tenth anniversary of the watershed Chicano Moratorium, Steve Weingarten filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the FBI for any files it may have on the award-winning newsman. The Bureau declassified 70 documents – and withheld 226 others. FOIA releases soon followed from the Central Intelligence Agency, State Department, Justice Department and other agencies.
